News From The Front

This page is used to pass on information to all of those people who just have to know what is going on here at Love Commandos HQ. Even if you aren't that desperate, it still seems capable of fulfilling the desire for information that those of us who are human like to call inquisitiveness.

Monday 15th October 2005
  • Gig over. Love Commandos still physically capable of full tour of duty. Now hungry to continue with the full sonic attack. 99.9% need not apply.

Monday 3rd October 2005
  • Lawks a mussy. Once again Chalky has dragged us kicking and screaming from the apathetic haze surrounding our Friday night reveries to help him celebrate his birthday and by jove we will. This will also be Richard's first appearance on stage (or probably more likely edge of room) as a fully fledged commando.
  • The Love Commandos have also been involved in a recording. Granted that it has nothing to do with their own material but is instead a charidee record to support the charity that Mr. Price is the treasurer of. The CD is a celebration of the nonsense work of Edward Lear. Just be thankful that it doesn't include any of his limericks. More information available on the Histiocytosis Reasearch Trust site.

Sunday 5th December 2004
  • Jon has now left for Canada. In spite of the rather large shoes that Jon wore, we have replaced him with a chap called Richard Price. Richard has added his biography info including some rather embarrassing photos. Richard has already been seen to move whilst playing the guitar. We didn't think that it was possible to both move and play at the same time. Wonders may never cease.

Wednesday 4th August 2004
  • Ken has built his studio and we have started the long, painstaking recording process.
  • Jon has decided that he has to move to Vancouver precipitating hurried arrangement of last ever gig with the current line up (See Gigs page for more info). This also means that we are looking for a new lead guitarist to fill Jon's ample shoes. Paper squashed in the end is acceptable.
  • Much wailing overheard at breaking news.

Monday 22nd September 2003
  • Still alive. Still being a bunch of apathetic perfectionists.
  • Ken is still building his studio.
  • Neil fails to remember what on earth "Needle" was like.

Sunday 29th September 2002
  • Failed to win battle of the bands. Due to complete lack of feedback from the organiser we have no idea what we need to improve on. Cheers mate.
  • Ken has started building his studio. The release of the Love Commandos album before 2040 is well on track.
  • The Love Commandos will not be playing Chalky's birthday bash this year because Andy is off on a romantic weekend and not because Neil is off to Canada to see Rush. There. It is now in print. It must be true.

Sunday 18th August 2002
  • Newsflash - gig added at short notice. See the gigs page.
  • Ken has mixed some of the tracks that we did back in February.

Sunday 17th February 2002
  • Well, a belated Happy New Year to one and all from the command bunker.
  • Recent attempts have been made at rehearsals to record the raw, live sound of the LCs so as to at least produce the dodgiest of demo CDs. Only Ken knows how well or badly this is going.
  • Neil still gadding about so not much has been happening. Jon joining the list of people to blame for cancelled rehearsals. Neil no longer feels quite as lonely.

Sunday 25th November 2001
  • Played last gig of the year at the Flapper & Firkin pub in Birmingham. Longest set we have played in a good while. Live debut of two new Love Commandos tracks which will become a staple fo the live set. More information on the gigs page.
  • Attempts to record the gig may not have been as fruitful as we hoped for.
  • Things becoming quieter over the forthcoming Christmas period mainly due to Neil gadding about.

Sunday 14th October 2001
  • Firstly, good luck to Mr. Hubble and his wife-to-be as they are tying the knot in the near future. We told him that the band comes first but he chose (sensibly) to ignore us so we are on a two week hiatus.
  • Practice continues for the upcoming final gig of the year extravaganza. Sadly, Cage are unable to play that night so we are currently in negotations for another support act. Watch this space. Make sure that you are at the Flapper & Firkin in Birmingham on Tuesday 20th November 2001. I can guarantee that there will be at least two brand spanking new previously unheard original tracks played.
  • Yet another new song in the embryonic stages tentatively titled "She Said". How do we find the time?

Sunday 2nd September 2001
  • Happy Birthday to our website. It has now been live for over one year.
  • Brand new gig information. Love Commandos plus special guests Cage to appear at the Flapper & Firkin in Birmingham on Tuesday 20th November 2001. This will probably be our last gig of 2001 so we would like to see as many people there as possible. We will hopefully be playing a lot of new material. We will also be recording the evening for possible live CD release so this is your chance to make yourself heard.
  • Mr. Jones and American Girl have been relegated from the potential set lists as we feel that, although they are both great songs, they no longer fit into our set.
  • lovecommandos.net email addresses are up and running again.

Sunday 5th August 2001
  • Third gig of 2001 completed to rapturous applause and massive critical acclaim. Details available from link on gigs page. Further gig opportunites in the pipeline for later in the year.
  • Number of website hits now passed the 1000 mark. Ken, you can stop visiting the home page now.
  • Rumblings within the band that some songs may be put out to pasture. More details as we receive them.
  • Problems occurring with lovecommandos.net email addresses. Please use horsburghn@clara.co.uk or the your replies page.

Wednesday 11th June 2001
  • Me and the Ghost Of You almost ready to be aired live.
  • Second gig of 2001 completed. Photos and details available from link on gigs page.
  • Number of website hits in the high 900's.

Sunday 3rd June 2001
  • New song under development tentatively titled "American Teenage TV Sitcom Song"
  • First gig of 2001 completed with merriment provided for all attendees. Set list available from link on gigs page.
  • Whilst on the subject of gigs, new date confirmed for the Harborne Festival on Sunday June 24th. The Love Commandos will be sharing a truck at the Green Man end of Harborne High Street with a number of other bands including Cage and Druidspear amongst others. The Love Commandos will be performing a half hour set some time between 11:00 and 17:00.
  • Andy produced some fliers for Golden Lion gig. Not bad either. His design degree is not going to waste.
  • Discussion started as to whether to release current unfinished demos as MP3s. Watch this space.

Sunday 29th April 2001
  • Ken has provided me with a preliminary mix of three of the demo songs. Jolly spiffing they are too.
  • First gig of 2001 confirmed - more details on gigs page.
  • Currently in the mid-800's in terms of hits.

Sunday 1st April 2001
  • Still not completed the demo. Promise of before Christmas release. No agreement on which Christmas.
  • Potential name front runner - "Taken By Surprise."
  • Guaranteed Christmas number one due to pre-sales alone claim by Lirp Aloof news agency.

Tuesday 6th February 2001
  • Now more than 700 hits.
  • Basic track laid down for "Respiration" even although Jon had decided that a freebie weekend in South Africa was more important than turning up.
  • Opportunity to play a festival in the Summer is currently being mooted.

Sunday 28th January 2001
  • Broke through the 600 hits barrier sometime in December.
  • The Love Commandos are currently in the studio recording their first mini album.
"Redline" and "Into Dust" are currently 75% complete.
"Respiration" should have its guide track laid down this Friday even if the lyrics are still somewhat elusive.
"Emotional Downtime" will need to have its guide track re-recorded due to previous over-enthusiasm.
  • Logo design discussed and initial idea agreed upon.
  • Current quest for a name for the mini album not 100% successful. Suggestions welcome through the guestbook.

Sunday 26th November 2000
  • Broke through the 500 hits barrier recently.
  • The Love Commandos played a well received gig last night at the Hare & Hounds Pub in Kings Heath. Quite a good venue. It would also seem that people enjoy our original material as well. We must get back to producing that demo.

Sunday 5th November 2000

Saturday 21st October 2000
  • Played Chalky's birthday bash. All wore www.lovecommandos.net t-shirts to promote the website ( t-shirts provided by Andy). A lovely time was had by all. See gigs page for more info.
  • 400th hit.

Friday 13th October 2000
  • Discussed methods of band promotion. Andy also put forward the idea that we should attempt to string more songs together. Agreement on this was reached.
  • Rob showed off his new black Gibson Les Paul Custom. He apparently saved seven hundred quid.

Friday 6th October 2000
  • As Rob is due to have his wrist repaired two days before Chalky's birthday gig (which is apparently a five band bill) , we rehearsed songs that we felt that, if we had to, we could play in his absence. Sadly this means that our original material may not get an outing until November.
  • Andy discussed the merits and flaws of a certain drum kit manufacturer.

Friday 29th September 2000
  • Andy had plum sauce in his beard.
  • Invaded Jim's shop again to record some basic tracks so we did. The basis of "Redline" and "Into Dust (Take It All Away)" were recorded.
  • Back in the rehearsal studio again next week to practice for Chalky's bash.

Friday 22nd September 2000
  • Ken's Hair.
  • Started work on "Rock Is Dead" by Marilyn Manson. Should be a stormer if initial indications are to be believed.
  • "Suck My Cow Pat" coming along very nicely indeed
  • Rob suggested playing the whole of "Misplaced Childhood" by Marillion. Jon said that he would prefer Jethro Tull's "Thick As A Brick". Neil said that he was game for either but that we would have to pull in a whole different audience. At least you can't say that we are not ambitious.
  • First search engine to respond to listing request. See http://www.ukplus.com and search for "Love Commandos" .

Friday 15th September 2000
  • After almost playing a last minute gig we knuckled down to more serious pursuits like deciding how comitted Andy was to the Wonderwoman theme song. "Suck My Cow Pat" moved forward but still lacks any words whatsoever.
  • The Masked Marauder turned himself in after overwhelming evidence as to his identity. No more shall he haunt the guest book with his music trivia challenges. He would have gotten away with it too if it hadn't been for those pesky kids.
  • Much talk of who would be who in both the A-Team and Play School. Any other suggestions for TV series and who should be who gratefully received through the guestbook. We may even publish them. Table included below for both the A-Team and Play School.
    Band Member A-Team Play School
Jon Attfield B.A. Baracus Big Ted
    Rob Bates Hannibal Little Ted
    Ken Bearman Amy Hamble
    Neil Horsburgh Face Humpty
Andrew Hubble Howling Mad Murdoch Jemima
  • The rumoured December gig has been removed from the schedule.

Friday 8th September 2000
  • After having a week off, we all met in Jim's shop where we proceeded to improve mightily on that week's takings. Eventually heading upstairs ( to the cosy High Horse Studio), we started to write what will become our fifth original song. Not that we have either finished or learned the other four yet. Current title (courtesy of Master Hubble) is "Suck My Cow Pat" or something approximating that. Not sure where the punctuation should be.
  • It would also seem that our presence may be required at yet another gig. At this rate, we will be playing three before Christmas bringing this year's grand total to seven I believe. Now that is what I call news.

Friday 25th August 2000
  • Preparations for our first demo continue with the refinement of our own material. The current plan is to lay down some basic tracks within the next month. There will probably be four or five tracks on the disc which we hope to sell at gigs. (Alternatively we will never run out of shiny beer mats). To this end we are preparing to play a gig in November to try out the material.
  • Our version of "Sex Type Thing" is sounding almost complete. Andy suggested that the Sacred Reich version of "War Pigs" would probably suit us better than the Black Sabbath version. The jury is currently out and may require to be put up in hotels for a number of weeks on this one.
